Marcus wasn’t a hacker. He was a forensic accountant who had learned to speak machine. The board had hired him to find the “anomaly.” A quiet leak of encrypted transaction logs. Something was siphoning data from the dead bank’s archives, and all evidence pointed to that forgotten Nessus instance.
Open an internet-connected device and navigate to the . Click My Products in the upper right navigation pane.
: Transfer the downloaded nessus.license file to the offline machine and register it using the command: nessus offline activation license already in use full
Locate the specific activation code triggering the error and click . Click the Reset Product Activation link.
This often clears the "full" state because it forces Nessus to forget any previous license handshake attempts.
The --deregister command may not be available in all Nessus versions. If your version lacks this option, resetting through the support portal or contacting Tenable support directly may be your only recourse. Last updated: October 2025
For offline VMs, fix the MAC address and hostname in your VM template. Do not allow dynamic hostname changes. Record the initial challenge code fingerprint in a secure vault.
The license is bound to the specific challenge code of the machine. Moving the VM or changing hardware will trigger the "already in use" error again.
Then re-fetch license status.
Once the code is reset, you can complete the registration on your offline host:
before upgrading or replacing a Nessus server.
