In the library’s server rack, the replacement SG-3100 hummed quietly. Alex ran a final check:
Note: On official Netgate appliances running pfSense Plus, the actual hardware serial number will be explicitly printed here alongside the Netgate Device ID. Method 2: The Command Line Interface (SSH or Console) On generic hardware, you can change the DMI/SMBIOS
The concept of a serial number in pfSense has evolved. Prior to version 2.3.4, there was no standardized, persistent identifier for a software instance. This changed with the introduction of the (also known as the Netgate Device ID or NDI ), which is a software-based identifier that is meant to be consistent regardless of whether the system is running on bare metal, in a virtual machine (like AWS or Azure), or on a home server. The Netgate Unique ID was introduced to solve the problem of hardware serial numbers being "unreliable, inconsistent," and prone to changing unexpectedly when an operating system was reinstalled. This ID is displayed on the pfSense Dashboard exclusively for informational purposes and is not transmitted automatically by default.
Netgate has acknowledged this as a known issue, noting that "it's purely a cosmetic issue so no need to panic". The recommended course of action is to contact support@netgate.com for assistance. A fix from Netgate Customer Support typically resolves the problem.
If you installed pfSense (Community Edition or Plus) on your own hardware, a protectli vault, or a virtual machine (VMware, Proxmox, Hyper-V), your system does not have a "Netgate Serial Number."
