The German electronic project Enigma, founded by producer Michael Cretu in 1990, revolutionized the music industry by blending Gregorian chants, world music, hypnotic trip-hop beats, and atmospheric soundscapes. Enigma's sixth studio album, A Posteriori , released on September 22, 2006, saw a partial return to the project's more atmospheric and serious side. The Latin title refers to "empirical knowledge" and the concept of deriving knowledge from past experience. Thematically, the album was inspired by the predicted future collision of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies, which gave the music a vast, cinematic, and sometimes foreboding feel. For this album, Cretu utilized a new all-in-one computerized mobile studio called "The Alchemist," allowing him to record in various locations. This creative shift was well-received, earning the album a Grammy nomination for Best New Age Album in 2007.
